Aquariums may be glass or acrylic. Glass tanks typically have a plastic banding around the top and the bottom of the tank. Acrylic aquariums do not. Some glass tanks also do not have banding. When ordering cabinetry you must indicate if it is for a glass or acrylic aquarium. If the aquarium is a band less glass tank, that should be indicated as well.

The banding adds to the size of the aquarium and the aquarium cabinetry is manufactured to accommodate it. A cabinet and canopy built for a glass tank will be a sloppy fit for an acrylic or band less glass aquarium.
